"Bring cash," said the nameless phone voice. "Arrive before 8 P.M. and enter from the sky bridge."

With mild trepidations, we followed the mystery voice's directions to the darkened car garage. Dressed for the unfolding drama, we entered the deserted store at 7:15 P.M. sharp. An operative, disguised as a waiter, stood by the entrance and directed us to the cafe.

The stage was set for intrigue. Balloons floated above a gathering of tables. The family-style seating gave the appearance of an innocent birthday party or celebration banquet. But, innocuous-looking pamphlets, filled with background information, clues and $100 in bribe money, told a different story.

Surrounded by fellow diners, we settled in for a night of suspense. The lights dimmed. Flamboyantly-dressed people began moving toward us in an almost choreographed fashion. Sitting quietly, trying not to draw attention to ourselves, we watched as diners were pulled from their chairs and urged to join the commotion.

Within minutes, conflict filled the air. There was name calling, shouting and suddenly . . . a dead body dropped at our feet. A crowd of people gathered around the body, pointing fingers and accusing each other. The question, "Whodunit?," hung in the air like secondhand smoke. Our job was to find the answer.

But not before we ate. The cast of would-be criminals transformed into waiters and began serving salads.

Mystery Cafe performs a comedy/murder mystery Friday and Saturday evenings at Seattle's downtown Bon Marche. In-between each of the four acts the suspects/actors serve you parts of a three-course meal, including salad, entree and dessert.

During dessert, the audience fills out individual cards saying whodunit and why they did it. With much fanfare, the true criminal is fingered.

Reservations are required. Tickets cost $36 and cover the show, dinner and taxes. The cash is for alcoholic beverages and tips. Children, ten and over, are welcome. Customized parties are available. Call (206) 324-8895.
